Decide how much time belongs to Petra

Before comparing roads, decide whether Petra is a short stop or a major part of your holiday. A long drive followed by a demanding visit and another long drive can make the day feel rushed. Consider staying in Wadi Musa so you can separate the arrival journey from your main day at the site.

This is an itinerary suggestion, not an accommodation booking or a fixed tour. Ask your accommodation for its vehicle entrance and parking arrangements, and decide what time you want to arrive before choosing stops on the way.

Pick a route that matches that decision

The official tourism transport guide describes the Desert Highway as the direct option and the King’s Highway as a more scenic journey through towns and viewpoints. Compare the actual route from your Amman address rather than using a generic city-to-city estimate.

If reaching Wadi Musa is the priority, keep the day simple. If the journey itself is part of the holiday, select a small number of stops and allow a full, unhurried travel day. Our Jordan road comparison helps you think through those choices.

Check the site, the ticket and your walking plan

Use Visit Petra’s official opening-hours page close to your travel date. Opening arrangements are seasonal and should not be inferred from an old article. Check the official ticket information and choose a visit that suits your available time.

If you are considering the Jordan Pass, check the official conditions, the package and your own eligibility before purchasing. The pass is not itself a visa. Entry permission and any visa-related benefit are separate questions.

Pack for the walking you expect to do and choose a realistic turnaround point. Save time for the journey back to the entrance. If accessibility, transport within the site or a particular trail is essential, ask the visitor centre directly before finalising the day.

Prepare the car and overnight bag

Choose the rental around your passenger and luggage count. A larger car is not required simply because Petra is on the itinerary; suitability depends on the actual route and your needs. Compare the Kia Cerato, Camry Hybrid and Kia Sportage, then ask the team about availability and the exact vehicle.

Keep an overnight bag easy to reach so you do not have to unpack every suitcase at each stop. Carry valuables with you, leave the luggage area tidy and confirm permitted parking with your accommodation.

Choose the next stop before leaving Petra

If the next destination is Wadi Rum, obtain the camp’s agreed paved-road meeting point before leaving Wadi Musa. If you are returning toward Amman or the airport, leave a comfortable margin and avoid making an international flight the deadline for a tightly packed sightseeing day.

Check the weather forecast and follow any site or road closure instructions. Keep an alternative activity or an extra night in mind if conditions change. The seven-day itinerary shows one way to give Petra a less hurried place in a wider trip.

Useful questions

Is a same-day return from Amman the best choice?

That depends on your available time and energy. An overnight in Wadi Musa can separate the drive from the main visit and reduce time pressure.

Are site tickets included with the car?

No inclusion is promised here. Arrange attraction tickets separately and confirm what your rental quote includes.
